Item description
THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM
Bram Stoker
Published in London, England by W. Foulsham Co. Ltd.
Note: The date on verso of title page states 1911; but this edition published in London in April 1925
Second edition, abridged. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 9-182 [191-192: ads], original purple cloth, lettered in white ink on spine and front cover in gold. In this edition, the only date to appear is the original ?1911? copyright notice on the verso of the title page. This edition was abridged and partially rewritten and condensed to 28 chapters and 182 pages of text.
The condition of this copy is very good, above what is normally encountered for the book. There are areas of fading where dust jacket material is lacking and light was able to access the fugitive colour of the purple cloth.
The inner hinges are not broken and firm; pages are not showing the usual paper toning as is commonly encountered.
There is a name and 1928 date unobtrusively written at the top of the front free endpaper. The book sits square without shelf slant. Overall a very good copy.
The dust jacket shows Edgar Cassell in profile and Castra Regis with chips and lacking an inch and a quarter piece at the bottom of the spine and a shallow strip at the top of the rear jacket panel and a quarter inch strip at the top of the front panel. There is no tape on the verso of the jacket. The dust jacket is enclosed in a removable Mylar jacket protector, and when on the jacket protects it and improves the appearance.
The book has several parallels to DRACULA (with Sir Nathaniel de Salis in the professor Van Helsing role).
?The Lair of The White Worm? is a supernatural novel concerning an ancient and monstrous white worm of ancient Mercia sequestered in a well for thousands of years and can transform itself into a woman.
The book contains some of Stoker's most graphic and grisly moments of horror." - Sullivan - The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 406.
