Item description
UPDATED RE-LISTED:
We were contacted by an interested buyer who asked for confirmation of hallmark. After trying to figure out the best way to do so, we decided to take the pendant completely apart and try our best to figure it out. Here?s what we found and note the pictures at the end of the gallery to support our findings.
When we took the pendant apart, it was four defined parts:
1. The frame and bail. Marked 14K on the bail which is one piece with the frame we acid tested and it is in fact 14K.
2. Back plate: Here is where it gets funky. It looks like it should be gold but doesn?t even pass the 10K scratch acid test, let alone any others. It may well be brass but there was no green leeching to indicate. Not magnetic.
3. Middle plate: Same thing as #2 except the part that meets the front plate (stock certificate) had a piece of paper over it (glued on) possibly to keep the front plate from moving but maybe to keep brass from leeching through. Very curious.
4. Stock Certificate or outward facing part of the pendant. We think it?s white gold as it did seem to hold for 10K but definitely not 14K or silver. Silver when combined with 18K acid, will yield a creamy blue color. This did not. We also have Platinum acid and that did not hold either. So we think it?s 10K white gold by process of elimination. It also gave us a chance to lightly glean the pendant which we did so you will notice a better looking result.
In the final analysis, it?s not all 14K gold but unless you take it apart, no one would ever know. Draw your own conclusions. We are readjusting the price based on the much lower gold content but - and I can?t stress this enough - the cool factor still remains.
The entire pendant weighs 17.9g. We estimated that maybe 5-6 grams in total are gold. The rest is just weight filler.
The last photo is the finished and lightly cleaned item.
Blown away by this find honestly. We have put in calls to Berkshire Hathaway and a jeweler named Borscheim?s that contracted with Berkshire Hathaway on their 50th Anniversary Shareholders Meeting to offer items like this to any shareholders attending. We do not know if this was an annual offering or a one time offering as we have yet to hear back from either place. We know from a single photo (listed in the gallery) that Borscheim?s was there at least once. We do know we have scoured the interwebs and cannot find anything else like it. There are gold ingots as pendants (usually 10 grams) but this is much larger at 1.5? long and 1 inch wide. Also 3mm thickness.
The pendant itself is marked only on the bail as ?GC 14K?. We did a scratch acid test and also confirmed with a jeweler that the rest of the pendant is 14K . We have not confirmed the actual mini stock certificate is but feel pretty certain it would be. We don?t want to harm or otherwise discolor that part as it?s the main focal point of the piece. In case you are wondering, the second facsimile signature is that of Warren Buffett.
No chain as our only yellow gold ones are not thick enough to hold this pendant securely. So bring your own chain to the game if you want it.
Truly a great way to say you?ve got a piece of Berkshire Hathaway and this is your ?dividend.?
See photos and reach out if you have information to add. Always greatly appreciated!
