Item description
Produced and published by one of the most prolific illustrators of the form, Henry Wellge, this stunning depiction of Pendleton, Oregon, shows the town in a period of significant growth and transformation in the years following the conclusion of the American Civil War. Wellgeโs career spanned five decades, and he is among a small cadre of cartographers responsible for producing more than half of the panoramic maps in the United States during the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Birds eye perspectives were popular marketing tools to entice residents and merchants alike and featured prominent civic features, religious and educational institutions, as well as other economic opportunities.
Pendleton was first inhabited by Europeans in 1851 when a trading outpost was established along the banks of the Umatilla River. This provided valuable access to the Columbia River and allowed for the growth of the City as an Eastern hub for trade in the Oregon Territory. Home of the iconic Pendleton Woolen Mills, the City has an enduring legacy of sheep farming in the surrounding areas. The City was officially incorporated in 1880 and had become the fourth largest in Oregon by 1900.
This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history with a distinctive aesthetic and classic style that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. The completion of the first transcontinental rail line and subsequent northwestern routes further increased expansion and access throughout the region, attracting immigrants from Europe, China, and the South.
Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube your print will arrive ready to be framed. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
