Volume XXIX, New Series Vol. VII, oe leather/marble paper hardcover w/gilt titling to spine, 8vo (9.750x6.50?), good/n.a., i-viii index, [1-3], 4-960pp. Front joint well started but holding, rear joint started 1? at the head and tail, general rubbing to all external surfaces, evidence of leather having been shoe-polished at some point in the past, text with a small amount of staining primarily in the preliminaries, very lightly age-toned. What a stellar sector of Captured Tyme, one scarcely knows where to begin. Profusely illustrated by noted illustrators of the day, this wondrous tome contains three first appearances from Mark Twain?s Huckleberry Finn, being three chapters - not the entire book. (Dec.1884, An Adventure with Huckleberry Finn:With an Account of the Famous Grangerford-Shepherdson Feud (11pp w/5 illustrations); Jan. 1885, Jim's Investments, and King Sollermun (2pp w/3 illustrations); Feb. 1885, Royalty on the Mississippi: As Chronicled by Huckleberry Finn (24pp w/13 illustrations). Other appearances herein are Henry James (The Bostonian), as well as articles by Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, Henry Grady, Robert Lewis Dabney, Phillip Sheridan, George McClellan, James Longstreet, P.G.T. Beauregard, Theodore Roosevelt, Lew Wallace, Fitz John Porter and many, many other notables of the day. Though not a beauty, it is a stunner for the information therein and loaded with illustrations from start to finish, many focused on civil war battles. A very distinctive book indeed, hard to go wrong on this one.
