Additional Information
New Zealand-born physicist Sir Ernest Rutherford remains one of the most influential voices in research in atomic and nuclear physics, and he is often ascribed the title of the father of atomic physics due to his work in theoretical and experimental physics. In 1908, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics "for his investigations into the disintegration of the elements and the chemistry of radioactive substances." Among his contributions are the concept of radioactive half-life, the discovery of radon, and the differentiating between alpha and beta radiation, all of which influenced scientists for decades.
In 1919, Rutherford became the director of the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, where, under his leadership, physicist James Chadwick discovered neutrons in 1932. The chemical element rutherfordium was named after him in 1997; following his death in 1837, he was interred in Westminster Abbey near other innovative scientific minds, Charles Darwin and Sir Isaac Newton. Rutherford began his studies at Cambridge and was among the first of the so-called 'aliens' allowed to conduct research at the iconic university. However, they did not hold a degree from Cambridge.
Even after receiving the Nobel Prize, Rutherford's dedication to science and his country did not waver. During World War I, he worked for the Allied forces at the top secret level, developing a system to solve the practical complications of detecting subsurface open-water vessels. This distinguished photograph captures Rutherford at the peak of his incomparable career, a testament to his versatility and dedication to his country.
