Additional Information
German-born theoretical physicist Albert Einstein is widely considered the most influential and greatest scientist in history. He is pictured here in 1947 in a classic portrait that would become an iconic image of Einstein following the most prolific period of his illustrious career. Perhaps his most significantcontribution to science was the introduction of his theory of relativity. Although he was also highly influential in quantum mechanics, and he re-shaped the nature of modern physics. Einstein received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 "for his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect."
In 1905, Einstein published four groundbreaking scientific papers that garnered him international acclaim in the scientific community during what is called his annus mirabilis, or miracle year. While visiting the United States in 1933, Einstein decided to remain in the nation following the rise to power of Hitler in Germany and the subsequent oppression his regime enacted. He was granted American citizenship in 1940, and he would later write a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt stating that the German military was likely conducting research into creating a nuclear bomb and that the US should consider beginning similar research to avoid catastrophe.
This iconic photograph bears a distinctive style and classic aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating a link to the past while capturing his legacy and influence in the modern world of science, theoretical physics, and other fields.
