While visiting the United States in 1933, Einstein decided to remain in the nation following the rise to power of Hitler in Germany and the subsequent oppression his regime enacted. He was granted American citizenship in 1940, and he would later write a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt stating that the German military was likely conducting research into creating a nuclear bomb and that the US should consider beginning similar research to avoid catastrophe.
