COVER: IRAN IN CHAOS.
TOP OF THE WEEK:
IRAN IN CHAOS: Street rioters ran wild. The oil fields shut down. As Iran slid into chaos last week, rumors swept Teheran that the Shah would hand over authority to a civilian government--or even leave the country. (Cover photos of crowd by Alain Keler--Sygma; of Shah by Giannoulatos / l'Express--Photo Trends-Camera Press.).
CAMBODIA: Hoping to draw attention to Vietnamese aggression, Cambodia recently admitted the first non-Communist Western journalists since 1975. Elizabeth Becker of The Washington Post toured Cambodia with two colleagues, inspecting the Angkor Wat ruins and visiting soldiers (photo) near the Vietnamese border. Becker, whose party was attacked by a squad of assassins, reports on Cambodia--and a murder.
DEBT ETHIC: American consumers live on borrowed money -- a huge amount well over $1 trillion. As a result, the U.S. economy may be living on borrowed time. Sometime this year, the consumer will probably hit his debt limit, and how sharply he cuts spending will spell the difference between mild slowdown and serious recession. Newsweek explores the debt economy, with profiles of Americans living in debt--and tells how they can find help if they get in over their heads.
THE LATEST TEEN DRUG: Taking a drink is virtually a rite of passage for adolescents. But today, more teen-agers are drinking, starting at a younger age, and doing it more frequently--often to the point of drunkenness. Teen drinking, in fact, has become such a problem that millions of dollars are being allocated for counseling and prevention programs--but as one expert put it, "Everything we're doing is to some degree an act of faith.".
HOT CRIME: Arson is the nation's fastest-growing crime. It is remarkably easy to commit and offers huge profits not only to organized crime but also to seemingly respectable businessmen. But both the Federal and local governments are beginning to fight back.
