Item description
Foundations on Expansive Soils (Developments in Geotechnical Engineering, Volume 12) by Fu Hua Chen (1979 1stE,2ndP HC no DJ)
? Author: Fu Hua Chen
? Illustrations: B W Photographs and Architectural Blueprints
? Publisher: Elsevier Scientific Publishing Company Amsterdam, The Netherlands 1979
This book provides the practicing engineer with a summary of the state-of-the art knowledge of expansive soils and practical solutions based upon the author's experience.
Part I discusses theory and practice, thus summarizes some of the theoretical physical properties of expansive soils. It also discusses various techniques employed to build foundations for structures on expansive soils such as drilled pier foundation, mat foundation, moisture control, soil replacement, and chemical stabilization. Part II presents five typical case studies. The author has found there are few records available regarding the cause of structural distress, their remedial measures, and, more importantly, the success of those efforts.
Appendix A gives a suggested method of testing expansion and uplift pressure of clay soils, as a discussion paper not reflecting any regulatory or professional requirement. Appendix B gives the authors response to common precautions and solutions often proposed for structures built on expansive soils.
Illustrated with architectural drawings and B W photographs. xviii + 282pp.
The author, Fu Hua Chen (1913-1999), was president of Chen and Associates, Inc., Consulting Soil Engineers, Denver, CO U.S.A. Honored early in his career as the man behind the incredible completion of China?s Burma Road during World War II, Chen became known worldwide as the foremost authority on expansive soils.
This book, Foundations on Expansive Soils (1975), is his most famous title.

Notes on Condition/Edition ratings:
Fine ? means like new, but any book produced over 10 years ago isn't ?brand new? or even ?new.? Booksellers needed some word to describe this...
Like New ? A new book, no marks no damage (except maybe remainder marks or shelf-wear) except not obtained directly from the publisher or in packaging from the publisher.
Good ? How someone else might take care of a book. Also referred to as ?standard.? This is the most likely condition for books of this age title, shows the book has been read or previously owned.
Acceptable ? How a young child, student or a librarian might take care of a book. (Either trying to make sure someone doesn't steal it by plastering ownership everywhere, filled it with copious notes or a book that has been damaged.)
Poor ? Combination of ?acceptable? factors above. Most likely with water damage as well. Might have
missing pages (you should ask).
Near ? Means ?almost? in an optimistic sense. e.g., ?Near Fine? means very good, but on the high end.
1st Thus ? Unique somehow, maybe 1st paperback, new illustrator, misprint or even the 1st edition. A collector might desire this copy.
