He thought it would make a good hobby. He has used over 100 different types of woods in his work. Most marquetry is done with veneer. First drawings, then woods selected. The wood is cut glued together inside another piece of wood. Many of his pictures have a wildlife theme because he enjoys camping and the outdoor life; also, irregular cuts are easier to make on a jigsaw.
