Item description
500 Giant Poha Cape Gooseberry Seeds - Physalis Peruviana Ground Cherry
Physalis peruviana, a species of the Physalis genus in the Solanaceae family, originates from the mountainous regions of Peru. The plant is popularly known by several names such as Cape gooseberry, goldenberry, poha, and simply physalis, depending on the region. It was first cultivated in England in the late 1700s, and by the early 1800s, it had also made its way to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. Throughout the 20th century, its cultivation spread widely across the globe, thriving in both temperate and tropical environments. Today, Physalis peruviana is grown both commercially and in the wild, known for its exotic appeal and value as an export fruit. Many countries have prioritized this plant in their breeding and cultivation programs, enhancing its agricultural value.
In temperate zones, P. peruviana behaves as an annual plant, completing its lifecycle within a single growing season. However, in tropical regions, it grows as a perennial, maturing into a bushy shrub that can reach heights between 3.3 and 5.2 feet. The plant is characterized by its velvety, heart-shaped leaves and sprawling branches. Its delicate, drooping flowers are bell-shaped, measuring between 15 to 20 mm in diameter, and are yellow with striking purple-brown markings inside. Once the flower fades, the calyx around it swells, forming a protective beige husk that fully encloses the small, bright orange fruit, which is highly prized for its sweet and tangy flavor.
This plant is considered economically important due to its high demand as a specialty fruit, both for local consumption and international trade. Its unique flavor profile and attractive appearance have also made it a focus for breeding and cultivation efforts worldwide.
