Item description
Brand new factory sealed vhs tape is Out Of Print (OOP) in all formats and no longer being produced.
Director Ferrand (Francois Truffaut) is working on a mediocre romantic melodrama with sullen actor Alphonse who falls for his married co-star Julie (Jacquline Bisset) in just one of the off-screen stories that's more interesting than what's being filmed. Some scenes run together and you lose track of what's "real" and the movie that's being made within this movie.
You get to see a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff like trying to get a cat to walk from point A to point B on cue and the frustration of the crew. A parisian street that is really fake store fronts or a subway entrance that leads to nowhere. A light is hidden in a candle so that the camera can photograph an otherwise too dark of a scene. The title itself refers to the technique of filming in daylight but making it look like night with special filters on the camera lens. A wryly affectionate look at the profession of moviemaking--its craft, character, and the personalities that bring a lot of baggage with them.
Won Best Picture Foreign Language at the 1973 Academy Awards.
