Philip Little was born in 1857 on Little's Point in
Swampscott in the American state of Massachusetts. He worked as a young man in
cotton and wool shop of his father and studied at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology , until he had to finish his studies because of illness. After
working for a short time for his father, he decided on a career in the design
field and enrolled at the Lowell Institute a. After his local training and a
one-year training in lithography at a company in Boston , he began in 1880 his
further studies at the Art School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts , where he
remained until 1882. He met here on the artist Frank Weston Benson from Salem
in Massachusetts. Little moved to the completion of his training with his wife
Lucretia Jackson also to Salem and shared a studio with Benson at the Chestnut
Street 2. Little worked both as a
landscape painter as well as a portrait painter. He exhibited his works since
his time in the Museum School and also won numerous exhibition prizes. He was
also a member of numerous artists' associations such as the National Art Club ,
the American Society of Etchers and the Portland Society of Artists in Maine.
He was a founding member of the Guild of Boston Artists. (Source:Wikipedia)
