In 'Angela's Ashes' (1999), Brooklyn-born Frank and his family soon return to their home town of Limerick in Ireland following the death of his baby sister in 1935. Malachy Snr. (Robert Carlyle) has difficulty finding work, and his drinking results in wife Angela (Emily Watson) falling on charity to survive. Frank loses two more siblings when twin brothers Oliver and Eugene die young, but manages to carve a life for himself in Limerick, eventually finding work as a coalman's assistant. However, times continue to be hard, especially after Malachy Snr. departs the marital home for good. In 'Stepmom' (1998), the career-minded Isabel (Julia Roberts) reluctantly takes on the role of stepmother when she starts dating divorc?e Luke (Ed Harris). The children's real mother Jackie (Susan Sarandon) is still very much involved in their lives, and is suspicious of Isabel's parenting skills. However, when Jackie falls ill, the two women have to reach an understanding with each other - for the sake of themselves and the children. Finally, 'Billy Elliot' (2000) is set in County Durham during the 1984 miners' strike. Young Billy Elliot (Jamie Bell) becomes fascinated with the ballet lessons which are being held in the same hall as his boxing class. The ballet teacher, Mrs Wilkinson (Julie Walters), recognises his potential and encourages him to join her class. As his talent gradually reveals itself, it becomes clear that Billy should be attending the Royal Ballet School in London, but with his father's opposition and the extreme poverty which descends on the area during the strike, Billy's future is far from certain.
