In 1849, Elder Wiggs (Ward Bond) sets out to accompany a group of Mormons on their journey to San Juan. He is joined by horse traders Travis Blue (Ben Johnson) and Sandy Owens (Harry Carey Jnr), and along the way they also pick up four members of a medicine show and a tribe of nomadic Native Americans.
