The author, Evgeny Vyacheslavovich Passek (1860-1912), was a Russian jurist and professor of Roman law. He served as the rector of Yuryev University. The book is bound in half-leather with a design resembling bindings of the era, featuring gold stamping on the spine. There are rare owner's pencil underlinings throughout the book.
