Item description
In Russian. Short description: Masquerade by Lermontov in the Sketches of Golovin, Edited by Academician of Painting E.E. Laxer, Moscow-Leningrad, 1941. Portraits of M.Y. Lermontov, A.Y. Golovin, and 69 illustrations on separate sheets are executed using the color autotype technique. The binding, endpapers, vignettes, and finials are based on the drawings by E.E. Lansere and I.A. Timofeev. Alexander Yakovlevich Golovin (1863-1930) was a renowned artist and set designer, an active member of the "World of Art" movement, an interior and furniture designer. Together with K.A. Korovin, he participated in the design of the Russian pavilion at the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris and the "Metropol" hotel in Moscow. In 1902, he was invited to St. Petersburg as the chief artist of the Imperial Theaters, where he created some of his most vivid stage designs. In 1914, it was planned to celebrate the 100th anniversary of M.Y. Lermontov's birth with a production of the play "Masquerade" at the Alexandrinsky Theater, designed by Golovin. The anniversary performance was intended to be particularly grand, but it was disrupted by the outbreak of war. The production of "Masquerade" on the Alexandrinsky stage took place only on February 25, 1917. Golovin paid great attention to costumes, hairstyles, room decorations, from furniture to the smallest details?all of this was reflected in the artistic concept of the play. "The talent of the artist and the correctness of his approach to the stage design of 'Masquerade' are evident in the fact that it was only with Golovin's design that the play gained a lasting stage presence.
