Product description: The churches of old New England are part of the priceless heritage of our past. On lonely hilltops or hidden in the crowded streets of cities, they remind us, if we will listen, of a way of life, of a mode of thought that is forever gone. George Francis Marlowe is admirably suited to write this history of the most interesting of our early New England churches. He has not confined himself to a discussion of their architectural details, but with humor and an historian's understanding he has told us of the architects who built them, the ministers who preached in their pulpits, and some of the members of their curiously assorted congregations. You will read of the several courtships of judge Sewall, who abominated "periwigs"; of the Mathers, father and son; of the mysterious James David and other regicides; of the Old Lights and the New Lights and the founders of Yale. From the ornate Old South and King's Chapel to the plain little meeting-house at Kittery Point, each church is presented as part of the life of the people who built it and worshipped there. Samuel Chamberlain, working in close collaboration with Mr. Marlowe, has made fifty-four beautiful photographs to adorn the text and to make more real to the reader these monuments of our earliest society.
