This is an extremely rare print.
ABOUT THE PAINTER: Pedro Puerta : Born and raised in the northern Peruvian city of Trujillo, Pedro Puerta specialized in the art of the linocut and woodcut. Almost completely self-taught, Pedro Puerta established a studio and printmaking workshop within his home. His original linocuts and woodcuts, printed upon either paper or cloth, represent the Mochica Indian culture of the region and depict some of it's greatest sites. Huaca Esmeralda is an adobe pyramid situated about five kilometers from Trujillo. Famous for its animal carvings this archaeological monument dates from the Chimu civilization.
The july 28, 1977 Valley News, Van Nuys, California includes an article which states that tourists visiting the Chan-Chan's ceremonial ruins located three miles from Trujillo, Peru's third largest city are likely to encounter the artist, Pedro Puerta, who they call 'El Hombre de Chan-Chan' (The Man of Chan-Chan). The article also mentions that he is a local historian of the Chan-Chan ruins who has devoted the past twenty five years studying the ruins. It also says that Pedro Puerta sells Chimu and Mochica relief rubbings from his art gallery located along the Pan American highway about a mile from the Chan-Chan ruins. The Brownsville Herald newspaper, May 17, 1977 also contains an article about Pedro Puerta. It reads; "The artist, Pedro Puerta, 43, has been a guide and then an independent authority on the ruins for 20 years. His gallery is near the International Hotel."
Today the art of Pedro Puerta is included in many public and private collections both in Peru and elsewhere. The Benson Latin American Collection at the University of Texas, Austin, lists three Pedro Puerta prints in its permanent collection. They are Hombre - Camaron Mochica (Mochica Shrimp - Man), 1981, Pesca Ritual Ritmica Mochica (Mochica Fishing Rithmic Ritual), 1981, and Miscelanea Mochica (Mochica Miscelaneous), 1981.
