Item description
In Spanish. Short description: Nicolas Guillen. Obra Poetica 1920-1958 Tomo I, Havana, 1972. Autograph of Nicolas Cristobal Guillen. He was a Cuban poet, journalist, and political figure. As a descendant of Africans, Guillen created his work within the framework of negrismo and processes of race mixing and transculturation, which he called "Cuban color". He was a laureate of the National Literature Prize of Cuba and is considered Cuba's national poet. In 1961, the Congress in Havana established the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba , with Guillen as its president. Guillen received various literary awards, including the Lenin Peace Prize for the peoples' peace, the Viareggio Prize, the National Literature Prize of Cuba etc. In 1972, Chilean singer Marta Contreras and the Cuban Grupo Manguare released an album titled "Musica para Guillen," based on Guillen's poems. In 1975, Cuban singer and songwriter Pablo Milanes released an album titled "Pablo Milanes canta a Nicolas Guillen," based on eleven of Guillen's poems. Similarly, the Chilean group Quilapayun recorded music for Guillen's poem "La muralla," which was later recorded by Spanish singers Ana Belen and Victor Manuel, as well as the Puerto Rican group Nueva Trova Haciendo Punto en Otro Son.
