He became widely recognized for his literary works that portrayed the struggles and joys of Puerto Rican people. Throughout his life, Orta Ruiz wrote extensively on themes of social justice, black identity, and anti-colonialism, earning him a reputation as one of Puerto Rico's most influential writers. In recognition of his contributions to Puerto Rican literature and culture, Orta Ruiz received numerous awards and honors, including the Government of Puerto Rico's Medal of Artistic and Cultural Merit, and the prestigious Juan Rulfo Prize in Literature.
