D'Invention Rubelles Majolica Plate , Circular mark: 'BREVET ADT D'INVENTION' 8 1/2" diam, with a country scene RARE, Attributed to Baron Alexis du Tremblay and his Rubelles Pottery between 1842 and 1855. Baron du Tremblay was a close friend of Baron Paul de Bourgoing. TECHNIQUE: "Emaux Ombrants" is a truly difficult technique to manufacture, translated from French as "enamel shadows". It uses the transparency of glazes to produce it's effect but it is the negative transparency, the shadows, that define Emaux Ombrants. Unlike majolica tiles the glaze surface of an Emaux Ombrants tile is almost flat, not embossed. The surface is smooth and almost flat but the image is crisp and has great depth, rather like a modern day holograph.Condition: No hairlines, there is a fleabite on border, shown on pic, some light surface scratches commensurate with age and some bubbles from manufacturer.
