First edition 1/2 green morocco/ marbled paper hardcover w/gilt titling and appointments, t.e.g., 12mo (7.125 x5.25"), very good+/n.a., viii, 102 pp., frontis, engraved title page, 7 full page uncolored plates by illustrator Richard Doyle, the half-title page is intact and in fine condition.
One of six Christmas books written by William Makepeace Thackeray in the mid-19th century, intended to be bought and given as gifts during the Christmas holiday - they were amazingly successful.Thackeray was a contemporary of the great Charles Dickens and regularly competed with him for sales. Rebecca and Rowena was written to be a continuation of the story of Sir Walter Scott's much venerated novel Ivanhoe; albeit with a somewhat humorous twist. A delightful tale and quite the distinctive and collectible tome - a marvelous section of Captured Tyme!
