It transpires that the alien has in the past consumed an old voyager space probe that was collecting information about the solar system and, frustrated in its desire for companionship -- Earth hasn't responded to its signals -- is threatening Earth with its destruction. STAR TREK 2: Wrath of Khan is a sequel to the 'Space Seed' TV episode of 1967, with Khan's cosmic renegade blasting back into understandably wrathful action from his prison-planet exile, and metaphorically, with Admiral Kirk discovering the upshot of his youthful wild oats living with lost love Bibi Besch on a threatened planet. Khan's insturment of revenge turns out to be a destructively wielded Genesis device, while his chosen transport is the commandeered USS Reliant.
