Item description
THE GOLDEN ARROW
By Mary Webb
Introduction by G.K. Chesteron.
Illustrated by Norman Hepple.
London: Jonathan Cape, (1930).
First illustrated edition, first printing.
Illustrated with four beautiful color plates, numerous full page pen-and-ink drawings, a map of Shropshire, and a bounty of detailed vignette art pieces by Norman Hepple.
This literary novel featuring very poor rural folk, one in particular who seeks the mythologized Golden Arrow that promises love, is set in Webb's beloved rustic Shropshire, and was her very successful first published book.
Lovely vintage-style gilt embossed binding.
Former owner's vintage inked name to the upper front end-paper, two page fore-edges roughly opened with a faint small tan spot, age-toning to the spine, slight wear to the upper and lower spine edges, very light age-toning to the cover borders as usual, else nicely square, firm and very good in green linen with gilt embossed titles and decorations to the front cover and to the spine, upper page edges slate-green, patterned illustrated end-papers; lacking a dust jacket.
Octavo; 352 pages.
