Item description
ARMAZINDY
by James Whitcomb Riley
Indianapolis: The Bowen-Merrill Co., 1894.
First edition, early state.
Frontispiece half-tone lithograph from a photograph.
Green bi-color binding state B.
Contains first edition points: 1894 date printed to the title page, 26 instead of 27 lines on page 110, 'My Bride That Is To Be' listed in contents page but not titled as such on pages 70-72, tissue-guarded photo-frontispiece, and no pages of ads to the rear.
Divided into two themed sections, the first half is a collection of folksy verse, spiced here and there with country sayings, dialects and philosophies; and the second half, subtitled 'Make-Believe and Child-Play' focuses on children and includes some very short, fun, prose tales.
A charming vintage collectible.
Upper dark-green, lower green polished linen with gilt embossed titles and wavy decoration to the dark green front cover and spine, upper page edges gilt, rubbing to the upper and lower spine ends and corner tips, former owner's vintage name-plate to the inside front cover, pages 2-3 show a light tan square offsetting, else very good plus; no dust jacket, as issued.
Octavo; 169 pages.
