He was educated in schools in Illinois and is an Agrege en Philosophie of Louvain University, Belgium. Folowing his studies at Louvain he taught in England for a year. He ws then assigned to the Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where he became famous as a teacher. His sermons on the radio program "The Catholic Hour," which he started in 1930, brought him national prominece. In 1966 he was named Bishop of the Dioces of Rochester by Pope Paul VI.
