Its soft, transluscent lucious red skin rarely cracks on even the largest of the 4 to 6 ounce tomatoes. Rose de summer is pure abundance once its starts producing and some Late Blight tolerance offers extra weeks of harvest even when disease arrives. Rose de Summer is a dependable and beautiful tomato for general purpose use (we like just eating them out of the garden). Its fruits are blocky, on the squat side, with a warm hue that is nearly peachy, often with a spot of yellow. Their skin is smooth and taut, pulled against a unique "architecture" that suggests subtle vertical ribbing. The flesh is tasty, great when eaten fresh, cooking, slicing, and saucing but especially good FRESH! Plucking them off the vine, you know you're getting something eminently useful. Very productive. It bested some formidable competition in my trials—including June Pink, Gulf State Market and the celebrated Eva Purple Ball—with a rich sweetness the others couldn’t match. I enjoyed one juicy 5 oz translucent smooth pink fruit after another. No slouch in the appearance department either, the unblemished globes are perfectly round, the soft skins not excessively fragile and the color and size very attractive, making it another excellent field-to-market variety that does not require high tunnels.
