UNTRAVELED TRAILS By Howard Hilles Dedicated to Corinne Roosevelt Robinson Boston: Sherman, French Company., 1916. First edition, first printing. Inscribed with verse, dated September 10, 1916, and SIGNED by the author to the front end-paper. Laid in is the publisher's printed promotional double-sided and illustrated sheet with Hilles' title poem to one side, and a description of the poems and the poet's style to the other side. Single fold to the center. Hilles, a poet from Bourbon Indiana, struck up a correspondence friendship with Corinne Roosevelt Robinson, sister of President Theodore Roosevelt and Aunt of Eleanor Roosevelt. Corinne, also a poet, had some assistance with writing from Edith Wharton and authored her own numerous poetry collections (beginning in 1911) and a memoir of her brother Theodore. Hilles and Corine letters from 1913-1938 contained original poems and personal photographs. Corine's husband died in 1918 after which her published poetry increased, as well as her letters to Hilles. This collection of Hilles poems broaches all moods and subjects with some commenting on actual famous people, some clever and humorous, some reflective, some narrative, and more. One section of nineteen poems is titled "Handmade Christmas Poetry". Faint soiling to covers, mild age-toning to the end-sheets, some soiling to several leaves, else very good in green linen with gilt embossed illustration of a path cutting through trees and hills, and gilt embossed titles to the front cover, and with gilt embossed titles to the spine, upper page edges green; no dust jacket, as issued.
