Item description
A FAREWELL TO INDIA
by Ernest Thompson
London: Ernest Benn Limited. 1931.
First edition.
Black cloth with gilt-stamped spine titles; in dust jacket.
Mild uniform tanned offsetting to the endpapers, else nearly fine; in a near fine dust jacket with a closed tear to the upper front panel at the spine, and a very small chip missing from the upper rear panel at the spine.
A novel set in India by an author who spent a great deal of time there, who knew the politics and the people. He was a close friend of Ghandi. He is remembered for his translations from Bengali into English and his association with Rabindranth Tagore, on whom he wrote two books including a critical biography. He was Tagore's house guest when news of the Nobel Prize came.
Thompson was a prolific author who wrote several works of verse and prose, fiction and non-fiction. He published seven novels on India. The first of these was An Indian Day (1927) which was touted as "a counterblast" to
E.M. Forster's A Passage to India published three years earlier. A Farewell to India contains characters first introduced in An Indian Day.
Thompson has been compared to other Raj novelists including Kipling, Forster, and Paul Scott.
A superior, tight copy without foxing.
