Publisher's statement "First edition, published April 1940" to the copyright page and 1940 date printed to the title page.
Title page, front cover, end-papers, and and wrap-around dust jacket illustrations by Forrest W. Orr.
Brief inscription to the half-title page, else very nearly fine in red-burgundy linen with gilt embossed illustration to the front cover, gilt embossed titles and rules to a black panel to the spine, illustrated end-papers; in a very nearly fine dust jacket with two minuscule tears to the upper spine edge; original printed $2.75 price still intact to the front inner flap.
This sixth historical novel following on the heels of DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK, is set in 1836 and features an orphan boy who grows up while working on the Erie Canal and in the circus, traveling from town to town.
Edmonds first novel, ROME HAUL, was also about the Erie Canal, and eventually turned into a Broadway play ("The Farmer Takes a Wife")
by Marc Connelly with Henry Fonda, and then adapted to film, again starring Henry Fonda.
