Item description
AN ATTIC CEMETERY:
Excavations in the Kerameikos at Athens Under Gustav Oberlaender and the Oberlaender Trust
by George Karo
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: The Oberlaender Trust, 1943.
First edition, first printing;
Publisher's complimentary copy with printed publisher 'Gift' bookplate to the front paste-down end-paper.
Inscribed to 'Donald Pflueger', (a professor who was also a highly acclaimed historian and author of numerous books on California history) and SIGNED and dated 1949 by George Karo to the front endpaper.
Illustrated with thirty-seven striking black and white plates, a portrait frontispiece, and four figure drawings in the text.
Oberlaender funded an extraordinary excavation in Greece, in a region the ancient Athenians called outer Kerameikos or Potter's corner.
It was from the tombs in this area that excavations lead to the uncovering of the magnificent vases, carvings and artifacts that are fully described and photographed for this reference book.
Wear to lower edge of front corner, else very good in blue linen with gilt embossed illustration of an artifact to the front cover and with gilt embossed titles to the spine; lacking a dust jacket.
Splendidly researched, this is an artfully presented and engaging reference.
Tall octavo; 45 pages plus 38 pages of plates.
