This morning we're unveiling a new opportunity for our sellers to earn tokens: helping to build our item catalog.
Amazon has built one of the most valuable assets in all the ecommerce land by cataloging all of their products, such that reviews & smart product recommendations are possible. The challenge with bringing this powerful sales booster to a marketplace like Bonanza is that most of our products don't have a unique identifier. Until now, to add an item to a product catalog, a marketplace would need an ISBN, UPC, or MPN. However, after several months of programming, we have developed & patented a means by which a product catalog can be applied to "long tail" (i.e., rare) merchandise like that sold on Bonanza.
The product catalog is not yet visible on Bonanza since we are still working to flesh it out, but we are hoping to present it within the few weeks.
One data point needed to catalog items is the manufacturer of the item. While our servers are pretty smart (and getting smarter) at figuring out manufacturers, we still need some human assistance to pick out the company that created a certain product. Enter the Catalog Builder. It accepts suggestions from our community that help us get the data we need to place an item into the product catalog. And you earn a token for every item whose manufacturer you correctly identify. Score!
The Catalog Builder is now linked from our "Community" dropdown (visible to logged in users). The page has an FAQ and other instructions to help explain the nitty gritty on how you can use it to earn tokens. Happy cataloging!

wow I am impressed sounds like you guys are really stepping up and making a difference in the virtual world selling community great job
Wonderful idea to create unique product identifiers for Bonanza. And to allow community members to catalog and earn tokens at the same time is a creative plan.
I have a question on vintage products, however, which may have been manufactured at the time by a company who has now been purchased by another manufacturer. ie, Butterick purchased by McCalls, Juicy Couture purchased by Liz Claiborne, and so on. Vintage Polo was Polo Ralph Lauren, now it is RL Corporation. Do you want the manufacturer at date the product shown was manufactured or the current manufacturer of the product?
Excellent question! Go with the manufacturer at the time the product was created. This is consistent with the fact that often times product quality can change or vary as a product changes manufacturers.
Sounds like a great initiative!
I see a Mikasa crystal tumbler listed. I thought Mikasa was the manufacturer.
This sounds great. However when I went to community and clicked on the catalog builder I was told I need a credit card on file. So I tried entering my credit card info and it won’t allow me because I have listed here my P. O. Box for my address. My Credit Card company has my home address. I don’t want my buyers to have my home address. Is there a solution?
Buyers should not have access to your personal address unless you disclose that information to them.
Awesome !…
Patented!?!? GOOD MOVE
Awesome love this
Thanks Mark,
Just needed to make sure!
Cool!
Pretty nifty!
I don’t know how this helps me much – most of my 4 booths the items dont have a specific manufacturer. ??
But I don’t sell high end fashion or handbags – so maybe it doesn’t affect me at all.
Regards
Julie
Most items should have a manufacturer (someone had to make it). We realize that there are going to be some items where a manufacturer cannot be identified by that seller but maybe another will come along and be able to identify it.
Since someone has to verify the information (which would require research on the part of the submitter and the checker) why offer this task to members? I’m confused. I understand the need to verify the information because it will effect the integrity of the catalog if folks are being careless with what they are posting. This is why I’m confused about having the members do the work on the catalog.
I did about 40 of them. You have to research the product to make sure you’re getting the Manufacturers name, not the brand. It is very tedious and time consuming. I tested it before I posted an opinion on it. I would be happy to continue when I have free time, which is rare, but I want to know why we are being recruited to do it.
It appears that another account associated with yours has already used the catalog builder recently. If you believe you have reached this message in error, please contact support with error code #234711
Only one booth can earn tokens??
I haven’t seen the “manufacturer can’t be determined” box in any listings? Is that still being worked out? Or am I looking at this entirely wrong?
I did a mess of them – and received no tokens. Wassup with that?
@jsgear Once Bonz verifies the accuracy of your choices you’ll get the tokens :-). I got some approved in a min. and some in few hours.
This is probably a stupid question, but hey….what about handmade items? We carry a wide range of items that we either create ourselves……or were handmade long ago (for instance, an antique braided leather lariat lasso rope that was handmade in Mexico years ago). Stuff like that.
So is this a sort of Members Only? Just wondering
Yeah, I was wondering about the handmade items as well anneblueangel2
Not a stupid question at all. Almost everything in my booth is handmade by me.
