Item description

(6) Antique Photographs of Descendants of Vinalhaven, Maine Founder Thaddeus Carver. Includes (3) three Carte de Visite (CDV) photos and (3) three cabinet card photos. The three CDVs include Thaddeus "Thad" Carver (a namesake descendant who sat for this portrait at the Wm. V. Lane studio in Vinalhaven); Horace Carver; and "Grandma Carver the second" taken in a studio in Rockland, Maine. The (3) cabinet card photos feature another image of "the second Grandma Carver (from) Vinalhaven, Maine"; Ed Carver, taken in a studio in Camden, Maine; and Jose Carver taken in a studio in Pratt, Kansas. Measure approximately 4.25 x 6.5 and 2.5 x 4.25 including mounts. Condition: These are original photographs, not a copy or reproduction. They are in excellent condition. Comments: Vinalhaven is a town located on the larger of the two Fox Islands in Knox County, Maine, United States. Archeological remains indicate that the island was first inhabited 3800-5000 years ago by the Red Paint People. Later, it became Abenaki territory. Europeans visited in the 16th century, and English Capt. Martin Pring named the archipelago Fox Islands in 1603. The first permanent English settlement occurred in 1766 when Thaddeus Carver from Marshfield, Massachusetts arrived and later purchased 700 acres from Thomas Cogswell on the southern shore near what would become known as Carver's Harbor. Others soon followed to establish the remote fishing and farming community in the Gulf of Maine.
