Item description
An 11" x 17" thick poster of Jose Chacra D'Jamus' photographic exposition featuring "Un dia con ellos (los Purepechas)". Held February 4, 2000 at the Antiguo Palacio Municipalde Tijuana.
The Purepecha or Tarascan are a group of indigenous people centered in the northwestern region of Michoacan, Mexico, mainly in the area of the cities of Cherian and Patzcuaro. The Purepechas established the Tarascan State in the 14th cnetury. It was one of the major pre-Columbian emires of Mesoamerica. Its capital was Tzintzuntzan. The Purepecha were never conquered by the Aztec Empire probably because of their superior coppersmithing skills. In 1525, having their popuplation much diminished by a smallpox epidemic, the cazonci Tangaxuan II pledged his allegian as a vassal of the King of Spain without a fight. The lands of the Purepecha was subjected to serious deforestation during the Spanish Colonial Period.
Their architecture is noted for 'step pyramids' in the shape of the letter 'T". Pre-Columbian Purepecha artisans made feather mosaics that extensively used hummingbird feathers which were highly regarded as luxury goods.
Poster is new with very minor creases from handling.
Shipping is $4.95 to anywhere in the USA. International shipping rates apply.
