Signed Beauties of Costume Jewelry

This beautifully designed and crafted vintage brooch is by Elsa Schiaparelli. The stunning 7 transparent black or smoky gray oval cabochons are faceted and open in the back. The fronts are smooth. They are accented with 5 round Aurora Borealis Rhinestones that flash lovely multi-colors. All the stones are prong set on a thick silver tone metal foundation with a flowing intertwined design, that makes a very nice combination of textures and colors.

It is signed with the script signature “Schiaparelli” inside the cartouche on the back. This brooch is identical to the book piece found on page 71 in the “Signed Beauties of Costume Jewelry” by Marcia “Sparkles” Brown, copyright 2002 with the 2006 Values on the cover except for the color of the stones. The picture in the book shows a silvertone brooch with purple cabochons and blue rhinestone accents instead of the black/smoky gray and Aurora Borealis stones in this brooch. In the 2006 book the price was shown as $235, I have seen similar ones selling today for over $300. The brooch measures approximately 2 ¾ inches by 1 ¾ inches. It is most likely from the 1950s or 1960s.

It is in excellent vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. All the stones are present and are sparkling and secure. The back of the stones could use a light cleaning, but I will leave that up to you. I don't want to risk damaging anything by doing it wrong. It has a rollover safety clasp that is nice and secure. Please look at the photos as they are part of the description and show the details better than I can describe.

This is as beautiful as it is rare and would be the perfect addition to your collection of vintage Schiaparelli jewelry. Schiaparelli was born in Italy and immigrated to the US. She began producing jewelry in 1934 and died in 1973 (1890-1973). Her jewelry is highly collectible. She was the subject of a recent show held at the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg. Here is the chance to own one of her special artistic creations.
