Figural Wearable Art
This is a lovely brooch/pin that was designed by Salvador Dali, the prominent surrealist painter (1904-1989). There are various descriptions of this brooch; one says it was made to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel, another states that the pins were given out as rewards for Israeli bond purchases. From research I believe the latter is correct, I have read that there were a total of 5 pins that were designed by renowned artists that included Lipchitz, Chaim Gross and Salvador Dali that were given as gifts to individual who made large donations by purchasing Israeli bonds from the 1960s to 1970s.
This brooch features an Angel or Winged Woman in flight with arms upraised holding a scepter. The die-cut Hebrew letters that run along the top of the wing say “Israel”. It measures approximately 2 ½ inches wide and 2 inches high. It is signed at the bottom of the front with Dali’s engraved signature with a crown on top and 1/66 (I'm guessing for 1966). There were several versions of this brooch made; I have seen one with a turquoise stone, one with a clear rhinestone/crystal and one without the rhinestone at the top. This one does not have a rhinestone so it was most likely the entry level reward. They were probably done to show the various levels of bond purchase.
This hard to find brooch is in great vintage condition as you can see by the many enlarged photographs. There is a small black streak below the wing on the Angel’s backside, it could be a spot of ink, but it appears to be original to the piece and I did not try to remove it. I didn't want to risk changing the finish of the piece. You don’t really see it without the magnification. The clasp works properly. Please look at the photos as they are part of the description and show the details better than I can describe.
This would be a wonderful addition to your collection of vintage figural jewelry. It is an unusual piece of wearable art history to add to your wardrobe. Perfect for any Salvador Dali fan or those who are interested in Judaica History!
