Synopsis:
Will Smith plays a real historical figure: Peter, a black man who escaped slavery from Southern slave owners after suffering torture, and the protagonist of the famous "evidence" photo of American slavery.
The film style is described as more like "Revelation" directed by Mel Gibson than "12 Years a Slave". Willam N. Collage wrote the script and the story is based on Peter's true experience: he escaped from the hands of a slave owner, endured the pursuit of cold-blooded hunters and the dangerous swamps of Louisiana, and headed north. And when Peter escaped to the Northern Army for inspection, he revealed his back, which was scarred by the whip of the plantation supervisor. This scene was captured in the famous photograph 'the whipped back', published in the Independent in May 1863 and in Harper's Weekly on July 4th of that year. This photo became one of the evidences of the cruel atrocities of slavery in the United States, and after its release, it promoted the abolitionist movement and prompted many free black people to join the federal army, spreading to various parts of the world. Rumors suggest that this photo caused countries such as France to refuse to purchase cotton from the southern United States.
