Antique INDIANA GLASS Hand Painted GOOFUS Glass "Bird and Grape" Flower Vase

Beautiful old Goofus glass antique vase featuring bird on limb with grapes. Goofus glass is pressed glass which was decorated with unfired enamel paint in the early 20th century,

manufactured by several prominent glass companies and was relatively cheap. Research indicates this pattern was made by the Indiana Glass Company circa 1919. I have seen it

called the "Bird and Grape Pattern", as well as "Odd Bird Sitting on Grape". This pattern was made in goofus vases, goofus wall pockets and carnival glass wall pockets as

well. It features a black bird, with red breast, sitting on a grapevine. Grapes are mixed colors, leaves are gold and green. The remainder of the vase is a brown color similar to

 cast iron.

Originally given as premiums at carnivals, Goofus Glass was made from about 1890 to 1920 or so. Because it was cheaply made and cold painted, the paint chips easily. Thus, the

popular name of this glass with unavoidable imperfections became Goofus Glass. It was the first carnival glass, preceding the iridized product known today as carnival glass. It

was the first type of carnival glass given away at movie theaters, carnivals, and as premiums for just about any major purchase, since it was relatively cheap to

make.  Plates, bowls, vases (like this one), and even oil lamps were made in mass quantities.

GOOD CONDITION ~ No nicks, chips, cracks, flea bites, or damage to the glass. Typical wear/flaking of the paint which is to be expected of Goofus glass, but really not bad

at all compared to most pieces I have seen. Noticeable flaking is around the neck of this piece.

Measures approx. 9 1/4" tall.
