Spalding Holdings Corp. is adding yet another model to the Ben Hogan line with the new Apex Edge Pro, which is due to begin shipping in February.

According to a company release, the Apex Edge Pro is designed to complement the current Apex Edge model by “offering game improvement benefits with a traditional look.” The new club, which is made of forged 1030 carbon steel, has an enhanced, perimeter-weighted head that creates a large, effective hitting area as well as a thinner top line designed to provide a cleaner look at address, much like the Apex Plus iron, which it is expected eventually to replace.

Other features include a cambered sole that reduces turf drag and a progressive muscle-back cavity. The idea, company officials said, is to give golfers the feel of forged as well as the forgiveness of a game-improvement club.

The Apex Edge Pro will carry a suggested retail price of $925 for steel shafts, 3-iron through Equalizer (Hogan’s term for PW), and $1,125 for graphite. The line will be promoted heavily at the grass-roots level with a long-running demo day program beginning in mid-February, as well as a new television and print advertising campaign that will break in January.

REVIEW: "I played off and on for over 40 years, but seriously for the last 5. In that time golf equipment has changed unbelievably. I started out over 40 years ago with tiny little Wilson Staff blades. For the last several years I have used a variety of "game improvement" irons. When my handicap dipped into the single digit range I figured I needed an iron that would allow more shot flexibility and also force me to work harder on my technique.

My son-in-law once had a set of these irons and he foolishly sold them before he could really appreciate them, a move he regrets to this day. I have had these for about a year now and I can truthfully say, I have never played a finer club. Aside from the obvious esthetic superlatives you usually hear, the clubs just play beautifully. They are more forgiving than pure blades but work the ball very well. Mis-hits lose a little distance but not much. The feel of a solid hit with a forged club is just too sweet.
