"Here was the Captain's chance ... " by Roy Best 1931.

This wonderful vintage lithograph was purchased at a San Francisco area estate sale. I was told that this original color lithograph was believed to have been salvaged from Roy Best's best known illustrated work for children, The Peter Pan Book, which was published in 1930. Chronology: Early 20th Century - prior to 1950 ... Mediums: Pastel Painting ... Subjects: Figural ... Styles: Realism/Representational ... Methods: Illustration & Painting ...

The lively illustrations still evoke emotion after all these years. It is very difficult to find this print in this condition. The print is in very good condition with only light age toning around the edges of the heavy stock paper. Printing on the back. The top & bottom corners are bumped. Knick at bottom right edge of page and a finger smudge. These small flaws do not extend into the lithographic image. Each print has a some text at the bottom of the print that accompanies the image. The image: 71/2" x 8 1/2". Dimensions of entire page: 9 1/2" X 12 1/2".

About Roy Best.

"Roy Best was an American painter that was reknown for his pin-up art illustrations. Born in Waverly, Ohio, Best attended the Art Institute of Cincinnati, working on a railroad construction crew to support himself. He later moved to Chicago, Illinois, and enrolled in the Art Institute there.

In the 1920s, Best was represented in New York by an artist agency called American Artists which handled nearly 100 highly regarded illustrators. While he was represented by American Artists, he painted several covers for The Saturday Evening Post.

By 1931, Best was painting pin-ups for the Joseph C. Hoover & Sons calendar company. That same year, he was awarded a commission from the Whitman Publishing Company to illustrate a children's book. That book, The Peter Pan Picture Book, based on J. M. Barrie's play Peter Pan, was widely regarded as a masterpiece. We believe these prints are from that very book.

In 1942, Best came to the attention of Brown and Bigelow of St. Paul, Minnesota; the art company that published Rolf Armstrong, Gil Elvgren, Vaughn Alden Bass, Mabel Rollins Harris, and Norman Rockwell. In the late 1940s, it was one of the biggest calendar printers in the world, employing some of the United States' best pin-up artists and putting calendars into an estimated 50 million homes Best accepted their offer of employment and went on to a highly successful calendar career."
