FOREWORD By GRACE KNOTT: It has long been my ambition to write a complete book on English Smocking, and after thirty years of teaching this beautifying and useful handicraft, I present this book. I feel sure the suggestions within these pages will help a beginner easily to grasp the fundamentals of smocking and make it possible for her to produce articles in a relatively short time that satisfy and please the eye. For those who are already experienced smockers I have included many new color designs. The book is profusely illustrated and includes helpful hints and suggestions for both old and new smockers. I have watched the growth of English Smocking with great interest through the years until now it is being taught in high schools and community centers and as a therapeutic hobby in hospitals and rest homes. You, too, will find that English Smocking is far easier to do than you ever imagined, and I know there are many hours of pleasure in store as you see the work of your hands evolve into a much-admired and useful item.
